MEET THE CURLSISTAS CREW
Co-founder + Creative Director, Joy Adaeze / Co-founder + Director of Business Affairs, Obi Okere
Joy: My husband, Obi and I launched CurlSistas.com — where natural hair meets personal style — in April 2014 because we wanted to celebrate our passion for natural hair, paired with my background in fashion. I went natural five years ago and love the freedom it’s given my hair. I’ve been a stylist for 6 years working on shoots for Cover Girl, InStyle, WWD, ESSENCE, Fashizblack and NBC. I started my personal style blog, JoyLovesFashion in 2009, which has been amazing. I love that people relate to it and feel inspired. It’s also brought many career highlights: being honored at Black Women In Media this year, a 9 page editorial in Refinery 29, features in The New York Times, ELLE, Marie Claire, Seventeen, Italian Vogue, NYMag and other notable outlets. As a blogger, I became known for my creative turbans that I would wear as both a bold accessory and protective style. I wanted to celebrate the beauty of natural hair and also my love for fashion, as a result CurlSistas.com was born.
Starting CurlSistas.com with Obi was a natural choice. When I first went natural, he totally had my back and even purchased my first natural hair product as a gift. He thinks my natural hair is sexy and I love that! We’ve been in business prior to this site, working together on my upcoming turban line. I’ve been in love with hair for as long as I can remember. I started doing hair for family and friends when I was fifteen. I love that CurlSistas is a stylish home for natural ladies to enjoy and get inspired. That’s what keeps me going!
Obi: Starting CurlSistas.com with Joy has been a blessing. In 2013, I didn’t know that within the next year I would have a natural-hair site. My background is in business development and career coaching. When Joy and I started this site, I knew my strength was in growing online businesses, and I always had a love for natural hair. I even helped Joy formulate many of her natural hair recipes. When Joy and I started CurlSistas.com, I quickly purchased the top three books on natural hair; The Science of Black Hair by Audrey Davis-Sivasothy, Better Than Good Hair By Nikki Walton, and If you Love It, It Will Grow by Dr. Phoenyx Austin. I studied these books and every other natural-hair site, forum, and YouTube channel, such as CurlyNikki.com, Black Girl with Long Hair, Naptural85, Taren Guy, and many more. Learning about natural hair has made me love it even more. I’m excited about everything our site represents. I love how it promotes the beauty that is in natural hair and gives inspiration for a woman’s personal style.
